Photographer Feature: Marissa Vickers

Every now and then we get the chance to work with amazing photographers - and Marissa is one of them. Keep scrolling to get to know her a little bit better!

Q: First off, where do you live and what's your favorite thing to do in your city?

A: I'm very lucky to live in Orange County, California. As much as I love spending time at the beach with friends, I find that I'm hardly actually there. But that's one of my favorite things to do!

Q: When and how did you become interested in photography?

A: I was 13 when I first became interested in photography. I got my first camera for Christmas and started taking photos of friends and random things in my backyard. When I got a little older, I started traveling and realized I needed to turn this into a career!

Q: Where's your all favorite destination to shoot?

A: Anywhere outdoors. I've been a passholder for Joshua Tree National Park for years now and it never seems to get old. I also really love Yosemite! There's something about nature that continues to amaze me no matter how many times i've seen it.

Q: What's something in your everyday life that inspires you?

A: Flowers, I'm a big flower girl. I try to keep as many flowers and plants around as possible. Something about the beauty they hold and new beginnings they represent inspire me a ton. I think as an artist, we can reinvent ourselves an endless amount of times so whenever I feel stagnant, I turn to the idea of blooming to start something new.

Q: Lastly, any tips for aspiring photographers?

A: PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! I'm self taught so I always used my friends, siblings, and nature in general to practice new lighting techniques and just overall find my groove of things. It takes time, but you'll get the hang of it. Especially when it comes to making someone in front of the camera comfortable. Even when you're editing, practice a ton. Presets are great but they won't set you apart unless you make it your own. Everything comes with time!
